Creating A Lineup

In baseball there is a higher change even the best players are going to get out compared to getting on base. In slow pitch even bad hitters have a really good change of getting on. So you will change your lineup accordingly.

Which means you don’t want your best power hitters hitting back to back. If your #3 clears the base you don’t want your other power hitter hitting with no one on.

Same goes for your worst hitters. You don’t want them hitting back-to-back, causing 1-2-3 innings. You want to be producing runs every inning not just at the top of the order.

You do want to put talented players at the top of the order still because they will get more at bats over the course of the season.

Here is a sample lineup. In a 10 man lineup, if you have 3 power hitters, 3 consistent hitters, 2 average hitters and 2 bad hitters you might create a lineup something like this:

  1. Fastest consistent hitter
  2. consistent hitter
  3. power hitter
  4. consistent hitter
  5. power hitter
  6. average hitter
  7. power hitter
  8. bad hitter
  9. average hitter
  10. bad hitter

The power hitters are spread out 3,5 and 7 to maximize the change of big hits with runners on base. You also spread out your worst two hitters so you don’t get back to back outs. Your most consistent and speedy hitter always hits first. You may want to have a consistent hitter in the 9 hole if your 8 and 10 hitters are particularly bad to prevent short innings.
